Mexico

In Reynosa, a border city in northern Mexico, thousands of families fleeing violence—much of it driven by cartel conflict—have found themselves stuck in makeshift camps near the U.S. border. Many are seeking safety from extortion, threats, and instability in their home regions. For children, this means living in uncertainty, often without access to proper shelter, schooling, or basic services. Days turn into weeks, and weeks into months, as families wait for asylum hearings or safe passage—leaving young minds vulnerable to trauma, anxiety, and learning loss.

According to the United Nations, over 60% of children on the move in this region report being exposed to violence or exploitation. Without safe environments to grow and learn, their futures hang in the balance.

Our Response

In response, Global Education Connection partnered with Big Heart Orphanage to support children living in shelters and transitional housing in Reynosa. We sent educational resources including robotics kits, books, and coloring tablets to help keep kids engaged and learning, even in the midst of uncertainty. These tools not only support cognitive development but also offer a sense of routine and creativity for children navigating incredibly challenging circumstances.
